Supplyframe recently launched a new solution called Electronics Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) within our DSI solutions. This new capability allows organizations to measure the carbon footprint of components on their BOM. With this new source of insight, companies can develop a roadmap for suppliers and customers to mitigate their CO2 emissions at the part level.
Join us as we explore the state of sustainability efforts in global manufacturing and how this new form of intelligence illuminates previous blind spots in total electronics supply chain emissions.
The Challenges Surrounding Scope 3 Emissions
Scope 3 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced primarily by the company’s suppliers in the raw materials, transportation, and distribution sectors. Supplier manufacturing, material consumption, and transportation are responsible for these emissions.
Until recently, electronics manufacturers have focused primarily on reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions to comply with government regulations and corporate sustainability goals.
Calculating Scope 3 emissions, the largest source of CO₂ (40%+) for manufacturers, has historically been cumbersome, time-consuming, and rarely performed as planned.
This lack of awareness created a significant blind spot for global manufacturers seeking to measure the entire carbon footprint of the electronics content in their portfolios.
As environmental regulations evolve, electronics manufacturers face growing pressure from their customers to report supply chain emissions, from raw materials to finished products. New US and European Union regulations are forcing manufacturers to find better ways of quantifying and reporting their overall supply chain emissions.
With Supplyframe’s Electronics PCF, customers can instantly see emissions data on any component in their BOM, enabling them to make tradeoff decisions to achieve their emission goals. As part of the launch, Supplyframe provides baseline emissions calculations for over 300 million components to accelerate coverage and intelligence for the most active components designed and manufactured.
How Does This New Source of Insight Impact the Wider Industry?
Supplyframe has positioned the Product Carbon Footprint offering in the broader context of Siemens Digital Industries Software solutions and an ecosystem approach to facilitate transparency, standardization, and intelligence along specific digital threads tailored to critical industries such as automotive, aerospace and defense, consumer goods, and high-tech electronics.
This new offering also leverages the sustainability partner ecosystem of Siemens, Supplyframe’s parent company, and will expand to be part of a broader set of metrics and analytics capabilities. The Siemens Xclerator Marketplace and SiGREEN initiative offer complementary solutions and ecosystem enablement.
New capabilities provide engineers and procurement teams with specific product carbon footprint details to meet regulatory reporting requirements. They also identify better alternatives that balance corporate goals of efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability.
This access to emissions data for millions of parts significantly reduces the time and effort required to calculate the carbon footprint at the part or component level of a complex bill of material (BOM). This process, which previously took weeks or months, is now available immediately at the users’ fingertips.
The new Product Carbon Footprint capability measures the total carbon impact from material selection to end-of-life, expressed in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent. The service is integrated into the Supplyframe DSI Platform, which already delivers industry-leading parts intelligence and supply market insights.
