In the case of complex components, sensors, and semiconductors, this is far easier said than done.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We explored the topic of semiconductor manufacturing in a past article, detailing <a href=\"https:\/\/supplyframe.com\/resources\/complex-expensive-manufacturing-semiconductors\/\">the complexity of the process<\/a> and the sheer costs. In total, the process incorporates up to 1,400 steps and can take up to 20 weeks to complete.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s almost impossible to start chip manufacturing from scratch. This is why we are seeing industry consolidation: it has become so difficult and expensive to do, that companies couldn\u2019t afford to do it on their own.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><cite>Alan Priestley, Europe Semiconductor Analyst at Gartner<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There are very few companies who specialize in the production of semiconductors. Roughly three-quarters of the world\u2019s total semiconductor manufacturing capacity comes from China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, specifically from companies like TSMC and Samsung.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s clear that capacity needs to increase, but even this will be a long and expensive process. Various companies are investing billions of dollars to expand production.
