Last week, Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/21\/amazon-is-starting-to-deliver-packages-with-rivian-electric-vans.html\">launched its first fleet of Rivian electric delivery vans<\/a> after several years of planning and testing. However, Rivian continues to face difficulties in production, slowing the rollout of the vehicles. While the possibility of Amazon transitioning to electric vehicles signals a massive shift in the industry, Rivian\u2019s inability to keep up with demand offers insight into the complexities of the automotive supply chain today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-valuable-but-risky-opportunity\">A Valuable (But Risky) Opportunity&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/19\/technology\/amazon-carbon-neutral.html?searchResultPosition=19\">Amazon invested in Rivian and ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans<\/a> from the company as part of a broader pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. This initiative coincided with Amazon\u2019s effort to move the delivery process in-house; by the end of 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/18\/technology\/amazon-electric-vans.html?searchResultPosition=5\">Amazon had nearly 200,000 of its own fuel-burning delivery vans<\/a> on the roads. The magnitude of Amazon\u2019s operations created a tremendous opportunity for the up-and-coming Rivian to make a name for itself and make a splash in the commercial EV space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, there were also downsides to the project, particularly in terms of its scope. Over the past few years, the automotive industry as a whole has been plagued with supply and production problems, all of which have especially affected emerging companies like Rivian, which lack the infrastructure and connections to weather major disruptions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/11\/business\/energy-environment\/rivian-earnings-electric-trucks.html?searchResultPosition=17\">semiconductor shortages to unexpected pauses in production<\/a>, and the challenges of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/21\/business\/rivian-amazon-delivery-vans.html?searchResultPosition=1\">juggling multiple assembly lines<\/a> for the company\u2019s three vehicle models, Rivian continues to struggle as they seek to get off the ground and keep up with demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-falling-short-of-targets-amazon-is-forced-to-outsource\">Falling Short of Targets, Amazon is Forced to Outsource&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of these ongoing supply hurdles, Rivian has had to repeatedly reassess production projections and timelines over the past few years. Initially, when Amazon placed its order in 2019, Rivian estimated that they would have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/19\/technology\/amazon-carbon-neutral.html?searchResultPosition=19\">10,000 vehicles on the road<\/a> by 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Rivian has fallen short of their initial targets; this year, the company has only shipped a few hundred units, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/21\/business\/rivian-amazon-delivery-vans.html?searchResultPosition=1\">Amazon estimates<\/a> that they will have received just a few thousand vans by the end of the year. While Rivian\u2019s factory is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rivian-layoffs-electric-rj-scaringe-email\/\">capable of producing 150,000 vehicles<\/a> per year in ideal conditions, it is currently operating at just 1\/6th of its capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivian has also been affected by external factors such as increasing competition and political developments. Rivian\u2019s supply and manufacturing issues have threatened the company\u2019s dominance of the commercial EV industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with an uncertain and longer-than-expected timeline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/18\/technology\/amazon-electric-vans.html?searchResultPosition=5\">Amazon has begun outsourcing EV production<\/a> beyond Rivian to companies such as Stellantis, Daimler, and Mahindra, thus eating away at Rivian\u2019s market share.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/21\/business\/rivian-amazon-delivery-vans.html?searchResultPosition=1\">Ford and Chevrolet have introduced<\/a> electric pickup truck models that directly compete with Rivian\u2019s R1T model, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/14\/ev-start-up-rivian-beats-tesla-gm-ford-as-first-automaker-to-produce-electric-pickup.html#:~:text=EV%20start%2Dup%20Rivian%20is,its%20plant%20in%20Normal%2C%20Illinois.\">previously the first of its kind <\/a>to the market. These established powerhouses in the automotive industry have been less vulnerable to the supply chain disruptions that have hindered Rivian\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-geopolitical-factors-further-complicate-matters\">Geopolitical Factors Further Complicate Matters&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>International political and economic conditions have also contributed to Rivian\u2019s failure to meet production expectations. Russia is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/our-natural-resources\/minerals-mining\/minerals-metals-facts\/nickel-facts\/20519\">world\u2019s third largest producer<\/a> of nickel, a raw material integral to the batteries that power electric vehicles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/rivian-shares-skid-supply-chain-snarls-dent-production-forecast-2022-03-11\/\">conflict in Ukraine<\/a> and the corresponding sanctions on Russia have led to a spike in nickel prices, forcing Rivian to pivot towards a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslarati.com\/rivian-battery-pack-amazon-delivery-van-estimated-range\/\">nickel-free battery<\/a> in its vans for Amazon. Meanwhile, amid plummeting stocks, rampant inflation, and the possibility of a recession on the horizon, Rivian has faced yet another obstacle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rivian-layoffs-electric-rj-scaringe-email\/\">laying off hundreds of employees<\/a> last week as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-cautionary-tale-for-automakers-everywhere\">A Cautionary Tale For Automakers Everywhere&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivian\u2019s trajectory over the past few years is emblematic of several trends across the automotive industry.
